Meet The Decorator
Hello. My name is Becky Rink and I am the owner of About the Cake, Inc, located in Avon, Ohio. I am the decorator, delivery person, and clean up crew.
And, I can bake a mean cake!
Growing up in a house where your mom made baking an almost everyday treat and spending countless hours pouring over the old Wilton Yearbooks designing our future wedding cakes, I discovered and valued the "Do-It-Yourself"er in me. Wanting to share this with my own children, I was given the opportunity through a birthday gift from my sister. While her husband watched my screaming infant, she and I sat down to what turned out to be the beginning of my passion. We made it through Wilton I, beginning cake decorating.
It was shortly after that class that I discovered there was more to decorating than the Wilton Method. The floodgates opened. Through the use of internet websites, message boards and library books, I embarked on the journey. I discovered I.C.E.S., an international group of sugar artists and cake decorators. It was and continues to be, a source that I draw from to help keep my designs fresh, unusual and interesting.
In the first couple of years, through the discovery of sculpted work and fondant, the challenges of gravity-defying works began to unfold. I began to get requests for cakes on a more regular basis so in 2001, About the Cake opened. I specialize in sculpted and wedding cakes.
I have taken classes from nationally known pastry artists such as Toba Garrett, Colette Peters, Di Simmons, Roland Winbeckler, B. Keith Ryder, and Michaelle Stidham.
I am not a classically trained pastry chef.
I am not a student of sculpture or art, nor do I have a background in art.
I am a baker.
I am a cake decorator.
I am a sugar artist.
I see a cake in everything!
I began teaching through an invitation from the local representative of ICES by demonstrating at an Ohio ICES Day of Sharing in 2005. Through this experience, I discovered the love for sharing my art through teaching. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to teach locally as well as out of town. Currently, I am teaching whimsical cakes, fondant face sculpting, carved purse cakes, and edible jewels.
